Oogenesis (/ˌoʊ.əˈdʒɛnɪsɪs/) or ovogenesis is the differentiation of the ovum (egg cell) into a cell competent to further develop when fertilized.[1] It is developed from the primary oocyte by maturation. Oogenesis is initiated during embryonic development.
