UNO/UNO Show Em' No Mercy

< UNO

UNO Show Em' No Mercy (usually called just UNO No Mercy for short) is a brutally difficult and ruthless version of UNO released in 2023. The game features harsher draw cards, some of the more painful house rules are made official, and if a player has 25 or more cards in their hand they are eliminated.

The Deck

The UNO No Mercy deck features 168 cards - 40% more than a standard UNO deck. The extra cards include an extra number card for each number/colour combination and four each of the new action cards - Skip Everyone, Draw Four, Discard All, Wild Reverse Draw Four, Wild Draw Six, Wild Draw Ten and Wild Colour Roulette. However there are no standard Wilds or Wild Draw Fours.

Basic Gameplay

Basic gameplay is the same as standard UNO, with the following changes:

  • The post-2018 rules are used when starting with an action card - ignore it and flip over another card.
  • If a player cannot play a card on their turn they must draw cards from the draw pile until they draw a card they can play. They must then play said card.
  • The stacking and 7-0 house rules are implemented as official rules:
    • Stacking: If a player has a Draw card (such as a Draw Two) played on them, that player may play a Draw Card of equal or higher value on top of the already-played Draw card to add to the penalty and pass it to the next player. The first player who cannot add to the stack draws the total penalty number of cards.
    • 7-0: If a player plays a 7 card, they choose another player and the two players exchange their hands. If a player plays a 0 card, all player pass their hands to the next player in the current direction of play.
  • Mercy Rule: If a player finds themselves with 25 or more cards in their hand, they are out of the game. Their hand is set aside until it comes time to reshuffle the discard pile into a new draw pile.

Action Cards

Draw Two

Acts the same as in standard UNO.

Draw Four

Same as a Draw Two, but the next player draws four cards instead of two.

Skip

Acts the same as in standard UNO.

Skip Everyone

Every other player is skipped and the player who played this card may play again.

Reverse

Acts the same as in standard UNO.

Discard All

Allows a player to discard all of the cards in their hand that match the colour of the Discard All in one move. The Discard All is placed on top of the other cards.

Wild Reverse Draw Four

The direction of play reverses, then the next player in the new direction must draw four cards and lose their turn. If played in a two player game the other player is skipped and the player who played the card has to draw the four cards, but they can use the stacking rule to send the penalty back at the other player.

Wild Draw Six

The player who played the card declares the colour that resumes play, then the next player draws six cards and loses their turn.

Wild Draw Ten

Same as a Wild Draw Six, but the next player draw ten cards instead of six.

Wild Colour Roulette

The player who played the card declares the colour that resumes play, then the next player must draw form the draw pile until they obtain a card of the selected colour. Then then add all of the drawn cards to their hand and lose their turn.

Scoring

If playing for points, the threshold to win is 1000 points. Cards are scored as follows:

  • Number cards are worth their face value.
  • Non-wild action cards are worth twenty points each.
  • Wild cards are worth fifty points each.

In addition, when a player is eliminated by the mercy rule, the player who caused the elimination receives a bonus of 250 points.
