Pokémon/Characters/Wally

Wally is a character in the Pokémon video game series. He is a sickly young boy and who acts as the protége of the main character as well as the Rival at the end of the game after you battle May or Brendan in Lillycove City.

History in video games

The player helps him catch his first Pokémon, Ralts. Though his hometown is Petalburg City, his parents send him to Verdanturf Town to stay with his cousin Wanda because they think the fresh air will help his health. In Sapphire, Ruby, and Emerald, Wally becomes something of a rival for the main character, appearing for battles twice in the game. Contrary to the traditional rivals, he always says he needs to train more and that "someday he'll win." Once he is defeated in his second and final position on Victory Road (and defeat the Elite Four in Emerald), it is possible to battle him repeatedly in that same location.

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

Wally first appears in volume 15, and is debatebly one of the Pokédex holders, as he only had one for a short time, and is not named after any of the games (though he is a character within them). He’s a sickly young boy with a respiratory problem whose parents didn’t want him training Pokémon. However, Ruby lends Wally his Ralts, and with Ralts he captures a Kecleon. He later obtains other green Pokémon -- Cacturne, Roselia, Treecko (from Professor Birch), and Flygon (from Norman). Norman enlists Wally to help him awaken the legendary Pokémon Rayquaza, because it is needed to stop Kyogre and Groudon from fighting and destroying the world. Wally sports an extra green vest in addition to his outfit in the games. The vest allows Wally to breathe normally in smoked filled areas that he normally could not due to his illness. At the end of the Ruby/Sapphire manga he returns Kirlia to Ruby, and his Pokédex to Professor Birch. However, his Grovyle was blasted off the Sky Pillar while Wally attempted to awaken Rayquaza for Norman. The Grovyle is rumoured to have evolved into Emerald's Sceptile as it shows an interest in his Pokédex, which had previously belonged to Wally. It is believed that Sceptile would belong to Emerald instead. Wally's Japanese name is Mitsuru.
